Description

Communications Assistant

The Library Foundation of Los Angeles (LFLA) provides critical support to the Los Angeles Public Library, resulting in free programs, resources, and services available to the millions of adults, children, and youth in Los Angeles. Through fundraising, advocacy, and innovative programs, the Library Foundation strengthens the Los Angeles Public Library and promotes greater awareness of its valuable resources.

The LFLA is looking for an organized, enthusiastic, and creative Communications Assistant to join our small, collaborative marketing and communications team. In this role, you’ll help share the story of LFLA’s work and the impact of the Los Angeles Public Library by providing administrative and workflow support across areas of branding, marketing, and communications through digital, print, and event channels. This position is a great fit for someone excited to grow in nonprofit communications and contribute to meaningful work that connects people with the programs, resources, and opportunities libraries make possible.

The Communications Assistant helps keep marketing and communications projects moving, bringing care, curiosity, and attention to detail to each assignment. This role supports LFLA’s core communications channels, including the website, email newsletters, social media, printed materials, and fundraising initiatives. The ideal candidate is thoughtful, adaptable, and self-motivated, with comfort working across digital platforms and a genuine interest in learning, collaborating, and contributing to a fast-paced team environment.

This position reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications and works closely with the Communications Coordinator and teams across the Foundation and the Los Angeles Public Library. Together, this role helps lift up LFLA’s programs, fundraising campaigns, events, and impact in ways that build connection, participation, and support for the Library.

Primary Duties

Communications-focus:

  • Assist with drafting content for the LFLA website, email communications, and printed publications, including the annual impact report, brochures, fundraising materials, and related collateral.
  • Assist with the design of marketing and communications materials, including invitations, presentations, event signage, digital graphics, and other visual assets.
  • Support behind-the-scenes for social media content in collaboration with the Communications Coordinator.
  • Assist with capturing and editing photo and video assets for digital and print communications, as needed.
  • Assist with updating website content in coordination with internal teams.
  • Attend and support LFLA events, including special events, member events, fundraisers, and public programming, as assigned.

Administrative responsibilities:

  • Assist with scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and coordinating related follow-up materials.
  • Help maintain marketing and communications project calendars, timelines, and task lists to help keep projects organized and on track.
  • Support the routine collection, organization, and reporting of marketing and communications analytics.
  • Help organize and maintain shared team files, templates, creative assets, and project documentation.
  • Assist with sourcing and ordering equipment, supplies, merchandise, and other materials for marketing, communications, and event needs.
  • Coordinate with vendors to support timely production, delivery, and fulfillment of communications and event-related materials.
  • Process department invoices, expense reports, and related administrative paperwork in coordination with internal procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, marketing, digital media, public relations, or a related field.
  • 0-2 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, digital media, or a related field.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with strong copywriting, editing, and proofreading abilities.
  • Experience with, or demonstrated ability to learn, communications tools and platforms, including:
    • Website content management systems, such as WordPress.
    • Email marketing platforms, such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact.
    • Project management systems, such as Asana, Monday.com, or Basecamp.
    • Graphic design, photography, and video production/editing tools, including Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
    • Photography or videography experience is a plus.
    • Major social media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn, as well as analytics and management tools such as Google Analytics and Meta Business Suite.
  • Experience supporting nonprofit communications, marketing, fundraising, or advocacy campaigns is a plus.
  • Comfortable using technology and able to learn new programs, platforms, and systems quickly.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to anticipate needs, solve problems, and follow through on tasks.
  • Collaborative communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Positive, flexible team player who is eager to contribute, learn, and support a mission-driven organization.
