Overview

The Coder ED/OP is responsible for ensuring accurate coding of outpatient records using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 classification systems, as well as charge entry for appropriately coded records. They input coding and patient information into the designated computer systems for billing and data abstraction, and identify and correct any discrepancies.

Qualifications

Education: Post High School Special Training

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Credentials or equivalent through AHIMA or AAPC

Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of basic and advanced ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding instructions, along with medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Verifiable training in coding systems, advanced medical and anatomical terminology, clinical theory, and reimbursement principles, obtained through college courses, hospital in-service training, or approved seminars.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in acute care coding, including Medicare, MS-DRGs, and APR-DRGs.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
