The coder/abstracter at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) codes inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10 and CPT in line with official guidelines.

Ensures accuracy per Health Information Management policies and collaborates with clinical staff to maintain compliant documentation and coding practices.

• High school diploma or equivalent required; certification in coding (e.g., CPC, CCS) preferred.
• Basic knowledge of coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, etc.).
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Job Description

The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record. Classification systems include ICD-10 and CPT edition, and all coding is in accordance with official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. All work is carried out in accordance with the Health Information Management Department and MUSC approved policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; certification in coding (e.g., CPC, CCS) preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

• RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, or other coding credential preferred.
