Job summary

City of Santa Cruz is seeking a Code Compliance Specialist to administer the code enforcement program, conduct field inspections, and coordinate with staff and agencies to ensure properties meet building, zoning, fire, housing and health codes. You will prepare detailed reports and guide owners through compliance steps.

The role requires strong communication, documentation, and ability to explain regulations to property owners, with a focus on public safety and livability for the community.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in planning, urban studies, political science, police science, construction technology, or a related field.
• One year of experience related to building codes, housing codes and/or zoning enforcement.
• High school diploma plus ICC certifications with two years of related enforcement experience.
• High school diploma plus three years of related enforcement experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs building and site inspections and enforces applicable codes.
• Compiles, analyzes and evaluates findings from investigations and inspections.
• Coordinates investigations and inspections with other regulatory or law enforcement agencies.
• Prepares clear, concise reports, correspondence and guidelines; maintains field notes.
• Advises owners on proper compliance procedures and required permits.
• Establishes effective working relationships with the public, staff and related agencies.
• Issues citations for non-compliance and enforces codes as needed.
