Job summary

The Building Inspector in Canyon County performs basic building inspections, reads blueprints and technical drawings, and verifies the project’s compliance to codes, regulations and ordinances. This is a journey level inspector/examiner position under the general supervision of the Assistant Building Office and Building Official, with considerable latitude allowed for independent judgment and initiative.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical training preferred.
• Knowledge of building and safety codes; ability to interpret statutes, rules and ordinances.
• ICC Building Inspector certification preferred; if not possessed at time of hire, certification required within six months.
• Idaho Driver’s license required.
• Background investigation is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs building plan reviews and on-site inspections for compliance with county codes and ordinances.
• Addresses code questions with contractors, design professionals and the public.
• Investigates hazardous or illegal conditions and documents inspections.
• Maintains records of inspections and communicates findings per county processes.
• Supports other divisions as needed and participates in public meetings and trainings.
• Provides outstanding customer service and promotes collaborative problem solving.
• Ensures safety practices and county policies are followed.
