Job summary

The Building Inspector in Canyon County performs basic building inspections, reads blueprints and technical drawings, and verifies the project’s compliance to codes, regulations and ordinances. • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical training preferred.
• Knowledge of building and safety codes; ability to interpret statutes, rules and ordinances.
• ICC Building Inspector certification preferred; if not possessed at time of hire, certification required within six months.
• Idaho Driver’s license required.
• Background investigation is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs building plan reviews and on-site inspections for compliance with county codes and ordinances.
• Addresses code questions with contractors, design professionals and the public.
• Investigates hazardous or illegal conditions and documents inspections.
• Maintains records of inspections and communicates findings per county processes.
• Supports other divisions as needed and participates in public meetings and trainings.
• Provides outstanding customer service and promotes collaborative problem solving.
• Ensures safety practices and county policies are followed.

Job Summary

The Building Inspector performs basic building inspections, reads blueprints and technical drawings, and verifies the building project’s compliance to codes, regulations and ordinances. This is a journey level inspector/examiner position under the general supervision of the Assistant Building Office and Building Official, with considerable latitude allowed for independent judgment and initiative.

Key Responsibilities

• Performs technical office review of building and construction plans and performs on-site building inspections for compliance with county and other applicable building and zoning codes, including but not limited to structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, health, fire safety, Americans with Disabilities (ADA), and other applicable codes
• Acts as a resource to contractors, the public, design professionals and other interested and affected parties on matters relating to code requirements and construction techniques and practices
• Investigates hazardous or illegal conditions
• Documents inspections, including violations and all records including inspection reports and correspondence with affected parties on compliance efforts through county directed processes and programs
• Assists other Divisions as requested, including, but not limited to posting of signs for land use cases, code enforcement follow up and site documentation for development applications
• Public Relations:
• Provides and models outstanding customer service by communicating respect, being open-minded, having a spirit of collaboration, and calmly resolving conflict with individuals
• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices and new developments in assigned work area
• Other Duties:
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance county policies, procedures and safety practices
• All other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities

• Applying technical knowledge of building trades work and using sound inspection methods to determine workmanship and materials quality and detect deviations from building and safety codes.
• Interpreting and applying statutes, rules, ordinances, codes and regulations
• Interpreting building, plumbing and mechanical regulations, and comparing them with engineering drawings, plans, maps and specifications
• Identifying construction deficiencies, code violations, and deviations from plans, regulations, and standard construction practices
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, contractors, homeowners, outside agencies and the public
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
• Operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties

Special Qualifications

• ICC Building Inspector certification preferred; if not possessed at time of hire, certification is required within six months of employment
• Idaho Driver’s license
• Must successfully complete a background investigation

Acceptable Experience and Training

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required and associate’s degree or advanced technical training in construction management or related field is preferred
• Four years construction experience or related professional experience is required
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work

Essential Physical Abilities

• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a variety of automotive shop tools including hand and power tools, electronic diagnostic and related specialized equipment, and adjust equipment.
• Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift 50 pounds. The principal duties of the position are performed in a public building environment and outdoors, including at construction sites and may include exposure to adverse weather conditions.
