We are looking for an experienced COBOL Systems Consultant to provide strategic guidance and expert support for our legacy system environments. In this role, you will evaluate existing mainframe applications, design tailored solutions, and collaborate with both technical and business teams to ensure optimal system performance and modernization. Your deep understanding of COBOL and mainframe operations will help drive continuous improvement and innovation across our legacy systems.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess legacy COBOL systems and provide strategic recommendations for performance optimization and modernization.
• Advise stakeholders on best practices, system enhancements, and risk mitigation strategies for maintaining legacy applications.
• System Evaluation & Analysis:
• Conduct in-depth reviews of existing mainframe environments, including performance analysis, code quality reviews, and compliance assessments.
• Develop comprehensive reports outlining current system status, potential vulnerabilities, and recommendations for improvement.
• Solution Design & Implementation:
• Collaborate with development teams to design and implement enhancements or migrations that ensure system resilience and continuity.
• Provide technical leadership during the integration of legacy systems with modern platforms, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
• Partner with cross-functional teams, including IT, operations, and business units, to align legacy system enhancements with organizational objectives.
• Manage consultancy projects from planning through execution, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget constraints.
• Documentation & Training:
• Create detailed documentation of system evaluations, proposed solutions, and implemented changes.
• Mentor internal teams on COBOL best practices, system maintenance strategies, and emerging trends in legacy system modernization.

Key Requirements:

• Experience:
• Minimum of 7 years of experience working with COBOL in a mainframe environment, with a proven track record in systems consulting, analysis, or architecture.
• Extensive experience in advising on system improvements, modernizing legacy applications, and integrating mainframe environments with contemporary systems.
• Technical Skills:
• In-depth knowledge of COBOL programming and related mainframe technologies (e.g., CICS, JCL, DB2).
• Strong analytical skills with expertise in system performance tuning, issue diagnosis, and robust solution design.
• Familiarity with modern integration strategies (APIs, middleware, microservices) to bridge legacy systems with new applications.
• Consulting & Communication Abilities:
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience presenting technical insights to non-technical stakeholders.
• Proven ability to lead consulting engagements, manage client expectations, and foster collaborative working relationships.
• Educational Background:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; an advanced degree or industry certifications in mainframe technologies is highly regarded.
• Certifications (Preferred):
• Professional certifications in COBOL, mainframe architecture, or systems consulting are a plus.
