Job summary

Lydian Labs, Inc. is seeking a Spring 2026 Coatings Engineer/Scientist Co-op in Boston for a 6-month term. The role involves developing and optimizing ceramic slurry coatings, evaluating coating quality, and scaling promising formulations toward pilot demonstrations.

This hands-on, in-person position requires cross-functional collaboration, strong safety practices, and data-driven design to inform coating processes for high-temperature operation.

Qualifications

• Focus on safety and mitigating risks in lab environments, including handling of powders and high-temperature furnaces.

Responsibilities

• Development of slurry coatings with different powders, binders, rheology modifiers and solvents, and characterization of slurry properties.
• Application of coatings to monolith substrates and evaluation of loading, uniformity, adhesion, and thermal stability.
• Scale-up of promising formulations to coat large substrates and translate small-sample recipes into repeatable processes for full-size parts.
• Collaborate with partners to develop scalable manufacturing techniques and transfer coating processes to partner equipment.
• Use advanced characterization techniques (e.g., microscopy, XRD, surface area, porosity, thermal analysis) to understand materials and coatings and guide experiments.
• Build, upgrade, and maintain coating and materials test equipment as needed.
• Coordinate with catalyst synthesis and reactor teams to incorporate requirements and solve problems.
• Document procedures and results, analyze data, and communicate findings and recommendations.
