Job summary

Lydian is looking for a 6-month Coatings Engineer/Scientist Co-op for Spring 2026 to develop and optimize coating materials, including slurry formulation, monolith coatings, and coatings characterization, as well as optimization and scale-up of these methods to enable pilot-scale demonstrations.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of materials chemistry and process engineering, developing slurries that can be applied uniformly and reliably to ceramic substrates and then survive

Qualifications

• B.S. or M.S. candidate in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, or related field.
• Hands-on lab experience and proactive attitude.
• Experience with slurry formulation and coatings (washcoating, dip coating, rheology).
• Understanding of reaction kinetics, heat transfer, and mass transport at an undergraduate level.
• Strong documentation, data analysis, and safety awareness.

Responsibilities

• Develop slurry coatings with different powders, binders, rheology modifiers and solvents, including characterization of slurry properties and their effect on coating quality.
• Apply coatings to monolith substrates and evaluate coating loading, uniformity, adhesion, and thermal stability.
• Scale-up promising formulations to coat large substrates (catalyst monoliths > 5 in long) to repeatable processes.
• Collaborate with partners to develop scalable manufacturing techniques and transfer coating processes to partner equipment.
• Use advanced characterization techniques (microscopy, XRD, surface area/porosity, thermal analysis) to understand materials and coatings, and work with external partners.
• Build, upgrade, and maintain coating and materials test equipment as needed.
• Collaborate with other projects to understand requirements and solve problems, especially with catalyst synthesis and reactor teams.
• Document procedures and results, analyze data, and communicate findings and recommendations.
