Summary: The Literacy Coach will maintain and monitor the implementation of the reading program, including professional development of school personnel. The Literacy Coach is responsible for ensuring the comprehensive instruction of reading within the school, as well as compliance with Full-Time Equivalency (FTE) rules and guidelines from the Florida Department of Education and the United States Department of Education.

Responsibilities
  • Provide instructional coaching to English Language Arts (ELA)/Reading classroom teachers to improve reading instruction and student outcomes.
  • Develop and conduct staff development for classroom teachers.
  • Maintain and monitor implementation of Hillsborough County Public Schools’ K-12 Comprehensive Evidenced-Based Reading Plan as approved by the state.
  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of best practices in all areas of literacy instruction.
  • Develop and conduct professional development for targeted audiences in the content area of literacy instruction regarding instructional strategies, best practices, and specific instructional topics.
  • Provide coaching to targeted audiences to improve literacy instruction, classroom organization and management, and effective implementation of district-recommended curriculum resources.
  • Conduct data conferences with classroom teachers to interpret data and plan instruction, and model effective teaching techniques when presenting to groups and other professionals.
  • Assist ELA/reading and content-specific supervisors in developing model lesson plans and curriculum.
  • Meet regularly with building administrators regarding classroom practices and provide ongoing feedback with the district reading supervisor.
  • Continue to develop professional expertise through professional readings, trainings, conferences, and required professional development as directed by the Academic Services department.
  • Promote parent and community outreach and involvement in the literacy instructional program at the school.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned. Responsibilities and tasks outlined in this document are not exhaustive and may change as determined by the needs of the district.

Experience and qualifications
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in classroom teaching, with two years of related management or supervisory experience required. Educational Leadership Experience Preferred.
  • Florida Professional Educator Certificate with either Reading Endorsement or Reading Certification required.
  • Language skills: Reads, analyzes, and interprets documents; communicates effectively in writing and speech.
  • Mathematical skills: Applies basic mathematical concepts; interprets data as needed.
  • Reasoning ability: Solves practical problems and interprets various instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Computer skills: Knowledge of relevant and current computer software programs.
Physical demands
  • Physical activities: Standing, walking, sitting, handling, keyboarding, talking, and hearing.
  • Lifting: Up to 10 pounds.
  • Environmental conditions: Noise level is moderate.
