Job summary

HNTB in Boston, MA is offering a co-op within our Stormwater and Utilities Design group. You will assist a team of engineers in designing stormwater management and utility systems, using AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and supporting data collection from site visits.

You will work closely with mid-level and senior engineers, contribute to reports and drawings, and gain exposure to regulatory and environmental standards. This is a valuable learning opportunity in infrastructure design.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent and enrolled in an accredited post-secondary engineering program.
• Basic understanding of engineering, geometry, and algebra.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to follow direction from peers and supervisors.
• Ability to perform basic engineering calculations.

As a co-op in our Stormwater and Utilities Design group, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the design and development of stormwater management and utility projects. Working closely with experienced design engineers, you will play a key role in designing effective and sustainable systems that mitigate flooding, manage stormwater runoff, and enhance the efficiency of utility networks. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated co-op to apply their technical knowledge and make a significant impact in the field of stormwater and utilities design.

The position is based out of our Boston, MA office. Relocation and housing are NOT provided for these positions.

Specific tasks performed by our Stormwater and Utilities Design Engineers include:

• Assist in the design and analysis of stormwater management systems, including detention and retention ponds, green infrastructure, and roadway drainage collection networks.
• Collaborate with mid-level and senior engineers to develop stormwater management plans and solutions that meet regulatory requirements and environmental standards.
• Support the design of utility systems, including water supply, wastewater, and stormwater conveyance systems.
• Utilize design software and tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, StormCAD, and similar programs to create and modify design elements.
• Attend site visits and conduct surveys with other experienced engineers to gather data, assess existing conditions, and evaluate design alternatives.
• Assist in the preparation of technical reports, design calculations, and construction drawings.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including environmental engineers, civil engineers, and landscape architects, to integrate stormwater and utility design elements seamlessly.
• Stay updated on emerging trends, best practices, and advancements in stormwater management and utility design.
• Participate in design review meetings and provide support to project teams as needed.

What You'll Need:

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program

What You'll Bring:

• Understands engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles at a basic level.
• Shows proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Accepts and applies direction from peers and supervisors.
• Obtains an understanding of introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures and requirements.
• Ability to perform basic engineering calculations
• Ability to organize information for use in drawings or other documents

What We Prefer:

• Completion of 2 years of post-secondary civil engineering program
• AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience
• Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure

The approximate pay range for Massachusetts is $25.28 - $37.92. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position based on all selected locations within the state at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
