Job Description for CNC Machinist
Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, secondary equipment, and grinders to machine metallic and nonmetallic workpieces by performing a variety of duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and start up machines; restart, adjust tooling to maintain proper sizes, and replace broken or worn tooling.
- Verify workpiece conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and go-no-go gauges.
- Secure all tooling and instruments required; position and secure workpieces in holding devices, machine tables, chucks, centers, or fixtures.
- Adjust work offsets and part zero.
- Adjust machine speed and feed according to different part specifications.
- Load tools and set tool diameters for cutter radius compensation.
- Install workholding devices.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor, including department transfers to meet production needs.
Required Skills and Attributes
- Recognize and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers.
- Perform intermediate shop math skills and calculations, including fractions, division, multiplication, and percentages.
- Possess basic computer skills for inquiry, data collection, or input.
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic and willingness to work overtime to meet deadlines.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in a CNC-related field; set-up experience preferred.
- Ability to quickly use control panels for offsets and edits on 2-3 FMS machinery.
- Machine parts to tolerances of +/- 0.0005" for diameter and +/- 0.001" for length.
- Read and interpret GD&T blueprints to specifications.
Physical Job Requirements
- Stand and reach throughout 8-10 hour shifts.
- Occasionally walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend.
- Perform repetitive or short-cycles work frequently.
- Lift, push, or pull up to 10 pounds regularly; occasionally up to 50 pounds.
- Observe all safety procedures, including wearing safety glasses, shoes, ear protection, and using machine interlocks.
