Job summary

Kern Microtechnik GmbH is seeking a skilled Field Service Engineer to install, diagnose, repair, and maintain CNC machines at customer sites in the Chicago area and across the U.S. West Coast.

This home-based position combines fieldwork with remote support to ensure optimal machine performance and customer satisfaction. You will diagnose multi-site issues, perform preventive maintenance, and document all activities while traveling up to 75% domestically.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of field service/technician experience in the CNC or machine tool industry.
• Strong ability to diagnose electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, PLC and CNC issues.
• Solid CNC milling knowledge; Heidenhain experience is a plus.
• Ability to read technical manuals, schematics and engineering drawings.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel up to 75% domestically.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair CNC machines and automation systems on-site across West Coast and Chicago area.
• Install, commission and test CNC machines and automation equipment at customer facilities.
• Perform preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
• Conduct machine demonstrations and provide technical support during customer visits.
• Accurately document service activities, parts used, labor time and issues encountered.
• Provide remote and telephone support to customers for troubleshooting.

Your mission

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Field Service Engineer with expertise in CNC machinery to join our service team. In this role, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing CNC machines at customer sites across the Chicago area and the U.S. West Coast - home-based position. You’ll be the face of our company in the field, ensuring customer satisfaction and optimal machine performance.

• Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on CNC machines and automation systems on-site across West Coast in a timely and efficient manner
• Install, commission, and test CNC machines and associated automation equipment at customer facilities
• Perform preventive maintenance to ensure optimal machine performance, minimize downtime, and maximize productivity
• Conduct machine demonstrations and provide technical expertise during customer visits
• Accurately document all service activities, including parts used, labor time, and any technical issues encountered
• Provide remote and telephone support to customers for troubleshooting and technical guidance

Your profile

• min. 3-5 years experience as a Field Service Engineer/Technician in the CNC or machine tool industry
• Strong skills in diagnosing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, PLC, and CNC issues
