Job summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an Assistant Director for Cloud Computing to provide technical and strategic leadership for secure, cloud-based research computing environments. This role will oversee transitions to cloud architectures while maintaining on-premises compute enclaves and ensuring compliance with HIPAA, NIST standards, and ISO/IEC 27001.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Experience designing secure cloud-based research environments (AWS, Azure, or equivalent platforms).
• Familiarity with university or academic research computing environments.
• Experience supporting data use agreements, security planning assessments, or audit processes.
• Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., architecture, security, or compliance) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical and strategic leadership for the design, implementation, and ongoing operation of secure research computing environments.
• Lead the transition toward cloud-based research computing architectures capable of supporting sensitive and regulated data.
• Design hybrid and cloud-native solutions that support data analytics using SAS, R, Python, etc.
• Coordinate with researchers, data governance, information security, and external partners to ensure secure, scalable environments.
