Job summary

Vultr is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Core Cloud Engineering team and help build the out-of-band (OOB) control plane that sits underneath every server in our fleet. This is the layer that makes a rack of bare metal behave like cloud — IPMI gateways, Redfish abstractions, DPU control and provisioning, serial-over-LAN, and the automation that ties them together.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience building backend services or systems software.
• Production experience in Rust, Go, or C/C++ with emphasis on Rust as primary language.
• Solid knowledge of Linux: processes, networking, systemd, basic kernel concepts.
• Familiarity with HTTP APIs, JSON, gRPC and RPC/IPC patterns.
• Familiarity with IPMI, Redfish, BMC tooling or bare metal provisioning.
• Strong written communication for design docs and incident posts.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain services that interact with server BMCs via IPMI/Redfish across diverse hardware.
• Develop control-plane tooling for DPU provisioning and lifecycle management.
• Harden serial-over-LAN, virtual media, and remote console workflows.
• Write observable, well-tested Rust services and supporting Go/PHP components.
• Contribute to internal SDKs and shared libraries used by infra teams.
• Collaborate with data center ops and vendors to debug firmware and DPU behavior.
• Participate in design/code reviews and on-call rotations for the OOB control plane.
• Improve tests, CI/CD pipelines, and tooling for safe hardware automation.
• Document interfaces, runbooks, and failure modes for reliability as we scale.
