Description

The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Based on the NMH framework for practice, the registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for providing and coordinating clinically competent, evidence-based care for an assigned group of patients. This includes diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing, the Code of Ethics, and the Nursing Social Policy Statement. As a member of the clinical care and unit team, the RN participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient care plan, achieve exceptional outcomes, and enhance unit operations. The RN exemplifies what it means to be an NMH nurse, reflecting the Mission, Vision, and Values of Northwestern Memorial, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards.

Responsibilities:

The professional clinical nurse's role is unique and essential to patient care, demonstrated through the framework for nursing practice.

Advocate:

  • Practices according to the patient-centered care model
  • Develops individualized, age-specific, culturally sensitive nursing care plans based on the nursing process
  • Incorporates patient advocacy into the care plan
  • Uses a team approach to develop and achieve daily patient-centered care goals
  • Values the contributions of significant others as part of the care plan
  • Identifies potential conflicts and facilitates resolution through established communication channels
  • Promotes and protects the health, safety, and rights of patients
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients

Clinical Expert:

  • Enhances clinical expertise through ongoing education and specialty certification when eligible
  • Continuously improves skills for high-quality patient care
  • Shares knowledge through education of team members, patients, and students
  • Demonstrates critical thinking by integrating knowledge to address clinical questions
  • Sets priorities, goals, and implements nursing interventions safely and promptly
  • Creates and implements individualized education for patients and families
  • Evaluates patient responses and adjusts care plans accordingly
  • Recognizes situations needing further intervention and escalates appropriately, consulting experts when necessary
  • Participates in team goal development and evaluation
  • Delegates and supervises interventions effectively
  • Communicates thoroughly during handoffs
  • Adheres to ethical standards of practice

  • Participates in volunteer initiatives annually, organized by Northwestern Memorial or independently

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an NLN-accredited nursing program
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or higher
  • Current Illinois RN license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification through the American Heart Association
  • Strong analytical, communication, and human relation skills
  • Proficiency in keyboard data entry and retrieval

Preferred:

  • Experience in specific clinical areas
  • Nursing specialty certification, if eligible
