Join The University of Chicago Medicine, as a Critical Care Outreach Nurse in the PICU Department.

Eligible for a Sign on Bonus up to $10,000!

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago is a state-of-the-art facility, with 20 general PICU beds and 10 beds designated for cardiac intensive care patients. The PICU team directs the care of these critically ill children together with consulting services from across the hospital, including both medical and surgical subspecialties (pediatric surgery, cardiac surgery, trauma surgery, ENT, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery).

The Pediatric Critical Care Outreach Nurse provides an advanced level of care to critical patients throughout the Medical Center with 24/7 coverage. Candidates who succeed in this position have critical care expertise from an intensive care unit and/or emergency department, and are confident and comfortable triaging multiple, complex priorities, all while delivering exceptional care and communication. The CCON responds to all Rapid Response Team pages and ward cardiac arrest calls and demonstrates an ability to assess and recognize a deteriorating patient condition, communicate with the interdisciplinary team, implement interventions, and provides assistance and support to the patient’s primary nurse to meet the emergent potential need of the patient.

Additionally, the Pediatric Critical Care Outreach Nurse assists and accompanies patient transfers to higher level of care or diagnostic testing requiring an RN. They maintain accurate documentation on the Rapid Response Team, cardiac arrests, activation of stroke team. They also participate in reviews and collating data from Rapid Response Team calls and cardiac arrests, report this data to Center for Quality, and improve the experience of critically ill patients throughout the inpatient areas, establishing optimal levels of care and improved outcomes.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program
  • Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • ACLS Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • CCRN
  • Minimum 3 years of clinical experience
  • At least 2 years of relevant ICU experience

  • Shift: Days 7:00am-7:00pm, every other weekend

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
