Job Description

The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Based on the NMH framework for practice, the registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for providing and coordinating clinically competent, evidence-based care for an assigned group of patients. This includes diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing, the Code of Ethics, and the Nursing Social Policy Statement. As a member of the clinical care and unit team, the RN participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve exceptional outcomes, and enhance unit operations. The RN exemplifies the components of what it means to be an NMH nurse, reflecting the Mission, Vision, and Values of Northwestern Memorial, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards.

Responsibilities

The role of the professional clinical nurse is unique and essential to patient care. The nurse demonstrates this through the framework for nursing practice.

Advocate
  • Practices in accordance with the patient-centered care model.
  • Develops an individualized, age-specific, culturally sensitive nursing care plan based on the nursing process.
  • Incorporates patient advocacy into the care plan.
  • Uses a team approach to develop and achieve daily, patient-centered, individualized care goals.
  • Values the contributions of the patient’s significant others as part of the care plan.
  • Identifies potential conflicts and facilitates resolution through established communication channels.
  • Protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient.
  • Maintains a safe environment to protect patients.
Clinical Expert
  • Enhances clinical expertise through continuing education and specialty certification when eligible.
  • Continuously improves skills to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Shares knowledge with team members, patients, and students.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an NLN-accredited nursing program.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or higher.
  • Current Illinois RN license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and human relation skills.
  • Ability to use a keyboard for data entry and retrieval.

Preferred:

  • Experience in the specific clinical area.
  • Nursing specialty certification, if eligible.
