Description

JOB SUMMARY: Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) will perform lab functions related to testing of patient specimens to facilitate direct patient care.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

1. Have one year of experience and be competent in performing routine tests and laboratory procedures in a Clinical laboratory, including urinalysis, clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and blood bank.
2. Prepare chemical reagent stains and solutions for automated equipment.
3. Prepare specimens to be sent out to the reference laboratory.
4. Meet CIH Laboratory competencies in each section of the laboratory.
5. Troubleshoot unusual or unexpected patient results and repeat testing as required.
6. Follow procedures for reporting critical results.
7. Prepare tissue samples for study by another staff member.
8. Make preliminary identification of bacterial cultures for review by a section lead.
9. Maintain laboratory stock, keep all areas clean and organized.
10. Collect specimens from patients and perform phlebotomy on all age groups.
11. Answer the telephone, record, and relay messages or redirect calls as necessary, referring urgent messages for immediate action.
12. Utilize computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and RPMS.
13. Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on automated equipment and maintain accurate documentation.
14. Perform quality control and assess results, initiating investigations when necessary.
15. Meet all mandatory education/training deadlines.
16. Maintain communication skills and proficiency in English for tactful relations with staff, patients, and families.
17. Possess understanding of laboratory compliance related to CAP, CLIA, & The Joint Commission.
18. Have good oral and written communication skills and organizational management skills.
19. Have experience with standard office functions and verbal/written skills.
20. Frequently walk, reach, kneel, stoop, stand, and lift up to 25 pounds.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Background check required.
