Summary

HOURS: 1930-2230. Training will be full-time on 2nd shift for 8 weeks, and a Regular Class during 1st shift is part of this training. Once trained, the position requires every other weekend and holiday rotations, as well as on-call rotations.

Position Summary: This role is responsible for the accurate, precise, and timely logistics of laboratory specimens from inpatient and outpatient areas. Duties include patient registration, insurance verification, lab test ordering, labeling specimens, distributing patient reports, filing, and assisting with questions regarding Laboratory services and customer service expectations. The position involves rapid movement of clinical specimens from critical, emergency, and acute care patients into the lab, supporting overall laboratory and hospital functions to ensure test results are not compromised.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform patient EPIC registration from various documentation, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work across multiple computer applications simultaneously, including insurance verification.
  • Place laboratory orders, document all aspects of the specimen and order, and understand the entire test menu for proper order entry.
  • Ensure specimen acceptability, including proper patient identification, labeling, correct order, and registration.
  • Process biological lab specimens accurately according to established procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Prioritize and organize work based on departmental processes, including urgent and emergent situations, expediting critical specimens.
  • Sort and distribute biological lab specimens accurately and according to priority.
  • Operate automated specimen processing equipment.
  • Meet expected turnaround times for laboratory standards.
  • Troubleshoot clerical and specimen issues to resolution.
  • Facilitate lab result distribution via phone, fax, and mail.
  • Provide customer service to internal and external customers in person and by telephone.
  • Work cross-functionally with other laboratory and clinical areas, supporting tasks like telephone support, high-priority report distribution, and supply dispersal.
  • Engage in quality measures to ensure quality care.
  • Abide by all regulatory and compliance standards, including those of the College of American Pathologists, PA DOH, and TJC.

Secondary duties include:

  • Managing departmental supplies.
  • Training and mentoring new or less experienced employees.
  • Identifying opportunities for professional growth and development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Ability to work across multiple computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six months of employment in a healthcare setting.
