Job summary

Block by Block is hiring a Cleaning Ambassador in New York City to keep public spaces clean, friendly, and safe. You will perform street-level cleaning, interact with pedestrians, and help visitors with directions while maintaining a positive presence.

The role involves litter removal, graffiti cleanup, weed pulling, and surface tidying. Schedule is Wed–Sun, 12:30pm–9:00pm, with weekly pay and benefits in a team-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• Carry out cleaning tasks in the assigned zone with a positive, professional demeanor.
• Greet pedestrians and provide directions or city information as needed.
• Remove litter and graffiti from streets, sidewalks, and public areas.
• Pull weeds from tree wells and cracks in sidewalks and vacant lots.
• Damp wipe and straighten outdoor surfaces such as trash can lids and news boxes.
• Monitor safety and report issues; complete daily task reports in English.

Pay Range: $19.00 to $19.00 per hour

What You'll Be Doing

• This role will provide a high level of visibility at the street level to carry out a wide variety of cleaning tasks in the assigned zone. Must maintain a positive, professional demeanor at all times.
• Actively acknowledge and engage pedestrians and visitors with a friendly greeting/smile in order to provide directions and/or city information.
• Litter removal - While moving through the zone with a rolling trash can that has supplies/tools, remove litter: fast food bags, cups, soda cans, cigarette butts, and other debris on the streets/sidewalks and alleys. Remove graffiti and posters from light posts, trash cans, news boxes, etc.
• Pull weeds that grow at the base of tree wells, in cracks in the sidewalks, and vacant lots.
• Damp wipe and straighten outdoor surfaces, such as trash can lids, news boxes, etc.
• Be watchful for unwanted behaviors or criminal activity and report to the Safety Ambassadors via two-way radios. Must be able to complete basic daily reports of tasks completed, which requires being proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.
