Job summary

Markel is seeking a Claims Examiner II to resolve moderate complexity construction claims across jurisdictions from its Richmond, VA area. The role involves analyzing coverage, investigating loss facts, and determining exposure under authority with potential mediations.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree, claims adjuster license eligibility, and 2–3 years’ experience in commercial construction or related fields, with a preference for industry designations and knowledge of claims

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license.
  • Completion of basic insurance courses or achievement of industry designation (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU)
  • Minimum of 2-3 years' experience in commercial construction or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of insurance industry or claims handling preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes coverage and communicates coverage positions.
  • Conducts, coordinates, and directs investigation into loss facts and extent of damages.
  • Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims.
  • Drafts coverage position letters.
  • Evaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured's exposure.
  • Handles claims in all jurisdictions.
  • Handles smaller property damage and/or construction defect claims with values up to $250,000.
  • Handles non-litigated bodily injury claims with values up to $250,000 in all jurisdictions.
  • Identifies losses which should be reported to SIU.
  • Participates in special projects or assists other team members as requested.
  • Provides excellent and professional customer service to insureds while maintaining a high level of production.
  • Represents Markel in mediations, as required.
  • Sets reserves within authority or makes recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager.

This position will be responsible for the resolution of moderate complexity and moderate exposure Construction claims in multiple jurisdictions. The position will have increased responsibility for decision making within their authority and work under general direction from their manager.

Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Claims Examiner II is $62,400 - $85,800 with 12% incentive.
