Job summary

Markel Corporation seeks a senior manager to lead a team of Claims Examiners handling a wide variety of general liability claims. The role reports to the Senior Director of General Liability claims and drives objectives and progress toward stated goals.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree (JD/advanced degree a plus), a claims license, 10+ years of experience, and strong communication, analytical, and leadership skills. Travel to other offices, mediations, and trials may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • JD, advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus.
  • Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license.
  • Minimum of 10 years of claims handling and claims management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims
  • Direct and monitor assignments of new loss activity for claims
  • Review and approve correspondence and reports including coverage position letters and Large Loss Reports
  • Review and approve reserves and settlements in excess of the authority of the handling examiner
  • Make recommendations concerning reserve changes to Senior Director or Senior Management
  • Participate in review and discussion of loss activity in the general liability book with interested stakeholders (Underwriting, Actuarial, Executive Management)
  • Ensure that team adheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal performance objectives
  • Assess and evaluate individual examiners and team performance, provide feedback and develop training needs
  • Prepare and distribute reports by collecting and summarizing information
  • Assist in preparation of budgets, evaluation of expenses and assess resource needs
  • Foster and encourage strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including Underwriting and Actuarial
  • Promote and enhance strong relationships with internal and external customers and partners
  • Participate in special projects as requested
  • Travel to other claim offices, mediations, trials, and conferences as required

This position will be responsible for managing a team of Claims Examiners handling a wide variety of general liability claims. This position will report to the Senior Director of General Liability claims and be responsible for conveying the organization’s objectives and priorities to staff and measure progress towards stated goals.

Responsibilities

Education

Pay information: The salary range for this position is $97,520 - $167,640. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company's annual incentive plan.
