Job summary

Markel is seeking a Senior Claims Examiner to resolve complex claims with strong analytical skills and independent judgment. The role involves coverage review, liability assessment, and coordinating with experts and counsel to reach timely outcomes.

You will lead negotiations, participate in mediations, and provide guidance to junior staff while upholding claims guidelines and regulatory compliance. A JD or advanced degree is a plus, with at least five years of claims handling experience.

Qualifications

  • Industry designations (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU) or training opportunities.

This position will be responsible for the resolution of moderate to high complexity and moderate to high exposure claims which may be subject to disputes that must be resolved in mediation or litigation. The primary purpose of this role is to handle claims from coverage enquiry through legal liability assessment (where relevant) and quantum analysis, to a timely and accurate resolution; ensuring mitigation of indemnity and expense exposure while communicating developments and outcomes as necessary to all internal and external stakeholders. The position will exercise increased responsibility for decision making within its authority, work with minimal oversight, provide training, and serve as a technical referral point for other team members.

Job Responsibilities
  • Confirm coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims
  • Analyze coverage and communicate coverage positions
  • Prepare coverage position letters on matters (without assistance of outside coverage counsel) and refer suspicious losses to SIU and assist in the investigation and settlement of claims
  • Conduct, coordinate, and direct investigation into loss facts and extent of damages
  • Direct and monitor assignments to experts and outside counsel
  • Evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured's exposure
  • Set reserves within authority or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager
  • Negotiate and settle claims typically in litigation within authority
  • Present at roundtables to senior claims leaders and underwriters on cases going to trial and provide advice/insight on other claims going to trial
  • Participate in special projects having an impact on the business; may be assigned project lead for larger projects
  • Represent Markel at mediations, trials, and conferences
  • Pull and analyze loss information for business stakeholders and present information during meetings with underwriters and/or insureds
  • Serve as a technical resource to underwriting and assist with drafting policy wording
  • Assist in training of new hires and provide assistance, guidance, and coaching to others within the claims department
  • Provide input into the maintenance of claims guidelines and best practice procedures
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • JD, advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus
Certification
  • Must have or be eligible to receive a claims adjuster license
  • Successful achievement of industry designations (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU) or participation in industry training opportunities (CLM Claim College, Munich Re Training, FDCC, etc.)
Work Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Successful completion of 3 years as a Claims Examiner

Pay Information

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job‑relevant education, job‑relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Senior Claims Examiner is $78,000 – $107,250 with 15% incentive.
