Job summary

Markel is seeking a claims examiner to resolve moderate complexity Workers Compensation claims across jurisdictions. The role involves analysis of coverage, negotiation, and coordination with defense counsel, underwriters, and internal teams.

Travel 10–20% is expected. The candidate should have 4+ years in insurance, a college degree, and strong written and verbal communication skills to support complex settlements and regulatory requirements.

  • Investigate, negotiate and settle non-complex primary and excess policy casualty claims.
  • Analyze coverage under casualty policies and draft routine coverage correspondence.
  • Manage litigation nationwide and direct defense counsel; facilitate economical resolutions.
  • Communicate with underwriting on significant developments; alert management as needed.
  • Participate in agent-related functions and ongoing training of claims examiners.

This position will be responsible for the resolution of moderate complexity and moderate exposure Workers Compensation claims in multiple jurisdictions. The position will have increased responsibility for decision making within their authority and work under general direction from their manager.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate, negotiate and settle non-complex primary and excess policy casualty claims including negligence, premise liability, commercial automobile, construction bodily injury, construction defect, product liability, and sexual assault.
  • Investigate and analyze coverage under primary and excess casualty insurance policies; make coverage determinations; draft routine coverage correspondence; effectively communicate coverage positions to policyholders and other stakeholders; manage claims involving coverage litigation.
  • Manage litigation filed nationwide against insureds; appoint, direct and manage defense counsel; proactively work toward expeditious and economical resolution of claims; assist internal business partners, including claims vendor management, disbursement and legal collections teams with defense counsel, bill payment and collection issues.
  • Communicate with underwriting as needed to manage claims and to alert of any significant developments.
  • Promptly communicate with management on adverse case developments and provide information on pertinent issues affecting professional liability product lines.
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Analyze and convey summations of complex issues; recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans, both orally and in written form.
  • Maintain and adhere to internal guidelines and procedures.
  • Ensure proper adherence to internal reporting requirements.
  • Contribute and assist in the implementation of a wide range of initiatives, discussion and action plans brought forth by management.
  • Participate in agent related functions and meetings as required.
  • Actively participate in the ongoing training and development of the claims examiners.
Requirements
  • Minimum 4+ years of insurance experience required.
  • Experience managing, overseeing, and partnering with third-party administrators, managing general agents, and/or managing general underwriters is a plus.
  • College degree required and professional designations preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Sound comprehension of insurance coverage posed by casualty liability and excess liability policies.
  • Ability to analyze and convey summations of complex issues both verbally and in writing; recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans.
  • Experience in determining contractual obligations, insurance coverage analyses, and investigations. Insurance coverage litigation experience a plus.
  • Ability to manage complex litigation, set loss and expense reserves and evaluate settlement values.
  • Work collaboratively and as team player willing to assist within the Unit and Casualty Division as needed.
  • Ability to proactively and independently manage a caseload.Travel required as necessary (approximately 10-20%).

Pay Information

The salary range for this position is $62,400 - $107,250. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company's annual incentive plan.
