Job summary

The City of Lansing is seeking a full‑time Engineering Technician II to join our professional team. This role utilizes a technical engineering background to ensure compliance with city standards, policies and procedures related to sidewalk, street, sewer, and utility construction as well as traffic control and right‑of‑way management.

A successful candidate will gain knowledge of MDOT specifications, soil erosion control guides, ADA, and traffic control devices while supporting inspections,

Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Michigan Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Storm Water Operator Certification within ninety (90) days of placement or next available testing sequence.
• Level 1 Concrete Field Technician (preferred).
• Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management or a related field (preferred).
• One (1) year of experience in sidewalk, roadway or underground utility construction and inspection (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Monitors contractor and homeowner compliance with permitted activities and ordinance requirements within the public rights‑of‑way (sidewalk, street, sewer, and utility construction and related ordinance requirements).
• Interacts with the public, other City departments and governmental agencies; gathers and provides information related to permits and right‑of‑way issues.
• Monitors soil erosion/sedimentation activities and investigates citizen complaints.
• Prepares sewer permits, right‑of‑way permits, soil erosion/sedimentation control permits, indemnity bonds, and related receipts.
• Inspects project sites to ensure plans, specifications and safety standards are followed.
• Mediates concerns between contractors and stakeholders.
• Collects field data regarding right‑of‑way property and personal injury claims.
• Provides in‑person and telephone assistance to the public and other departments on sewer and drainage issues and public improvements.
• Enforces adopted standards for construction and repair of sidewalks and city infrastructure.
• Issues building address numbers and legal descriptions, layouts for new buildings and numbering for subdivisions.
• Reads sewer maps and guides contractors and the public on procedures and materials.
• Reviews and issues permits for right‑of‑way, utilities, oversize/overweight transport, and erosion control.
• Maintains inspection logs and records.
• Assists in conducting traffic counts.
• Responds to information requests from contractors, developers and the public.
• Collects sewer connection and permit fees and records deposits.
