Job summary

Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Civil Engineer Trainee to oversee inspection, documentation and safety requirements for highway improvements during construction. The role may include winter studies and plans work, with opportunities for advancement through the civil engineering track.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET-accredited) or an IL engineer intern/PE license, with strong communication skills and willingness to travel districtwide.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in engineering from ABET-accredited college (or expected graduation within 12 months).
Illinois Engineer Intern, Professional Engineer, or Structural Engineer license in IL preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

Inspect and document highway construction projects with accuracy.
Perform general studies and plans work during winter months.
Maintain harmonious relationships with contractors, property owners, utilities and the public.
Adhere to departmental safety rules and act with fairness toward all employees.
Perform other duties as assigned.
