Job summary

Houston Engineering, Inc. (HEI) seeks a Civil Engineer Intern to gain hands-on field experience in outdoor construction activities and in-office support across diverse projects.

You will assist engineers with plan specs, estimates, and documentation while working with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and ArcGIS.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Civil Engineering or related program.
• Completion of surveying coursework is preferred.
• Able to work outdoors for extended periods.
• Strong math and communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office is expected.

Responsibilities

• Assist with plan specs, estimates, and documenting construction activities.
• Assist with AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and redlines.
• Operate GPS and Total Station survey instruments.
• Use Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS
• Support research and design of projects.

A Civil Engineer Intern with Houston Engineering Inc. (HEI) will spend time in the field working on outdoor construction phase activities as well as a variety of in-office projects assisting engineers.Structural engineering projects range from complex grade separation projects and large bridges spanning a river with architectural enhancements to box culverts for a rural township over a small ditch.

Structural engineering projects range from complex grade separation projects and large bridges spanning a river with architectural enhancements to box culverts for a rural township over a small ditch. The structural engineers have also designed a variety of hydraulic structures such as dams, floodwalls, gate wells, and some of the most complex lift stations in the region!

Job Description

As an intern, responsibilities may include some or all of the following:

• Assist with plan specifications and estimates as well as documenting construction activities.
• Assist withAutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and updateredlines withvarious project set drawings.
• Operate electronic survey instruments such as GPS and Total Station.
• Perform workin a variety ofsoftware such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS,etc.
• Potential observation and data collection at different types of project sites.
• Assistwith research, development and design of projects.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Civil Engineering, or related Engineering program.
• Completed coursework in general surveying and AutoCAD are preferred.
• Able to work extended periods of time in outdoor conditions.
• Above average math and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and availability for overnight travel.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with Civil 3D and ArcGIS is helpful.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, and clients.
• Task management skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, following up, and keeping project information organized.
• Problem solving and analytical skills.
