Job summary

Houston Engineering, Inc. invites Civil Engineering students to join a hands-on internship that blends fieldwork on outdoor construction activities with diverse in-office projects.

You will work with engineers to observe, document, and assist on design tasks, gaining practical experience on real local projects. The program emphasizes mentorship, learning roadway design, drainage analysis, surveying, and erosion control, with opportunities to use AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and ArcGIS.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering, Bioproducts and Biosystem Engineering, or related Engineering program.
• Completed coursework in general surveying and AutoCAD is preferred.
• Able to work extended periods outdoors and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Assist with plan specifications and estimates and document construction activities.
• Assist with AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and update drawings with project set drawings.
• Operate GPS and Total Station survey instruments.
• Perform work in software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS.
• Potential observation and data collection at different project sites.
• Assist with research, development and design of projects.

A Civil Engineer Intern with Houston Engineering Inc. (HEI) will spend time in the field working on outdoor construction phase activities as well as a variety of in‑office projects assisting engineers.

Job Description

As an intern, responsibilities may include some or all of the following:

• Assist with plan specifications and estimates as well as documenting construction activities.
• Assist withAutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and updateredlines withvarious project set drawings.
• Operate electronic survey instruments such as GPS and Total Station.
• Perform workin a variety ofsoftware such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS,etc.
• Potential observation and data collection at different types of project sites.
• Assistwith research, development and design of projects.

We strive to provide a personalized internship based on your area of interest. This may include learning how to do roadway design, geometric layout, drainage analysis, and erosion control.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering, Bioproducts and Biosystem Engineering, or related Engineering program.
• Completed coursework in general surveying and AutoCAD are preferred.
• Able to work extended periods of time in outdoor conditions.
• Above average math and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and availability for overnight travel.
