Job summary

The City of Kalamazoo, MI is seeking Civil Engineer I/II/III to supervise capital improvement projects across Water Resources, Wastewater, or Public Works/Traffic. Responsibilities range from design to construction inspections and contract management, with growth to project leadership.

Entry Engineers start under supervision; II/III assume independent roles, manage teams, and ensure regulatory compliance. A PE license is preferred and a valid Michigan driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) certification for II is desirable.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with customers and teams.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and manages projects, contracts, budgets and schedules.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and manages long-range and short-range planning of projects and capital improvements.
  • Prepares and approves designs, drawings, and bidding documents; conducts surveys.
  • Provides analysis, recommendations and designs; investigates situations.
  • Conducts construction inspections, reviews contractor pay requests and change orders.
  • Communicates with property owners on right-of-way acquisitions and coordinates appraisers.
