Job Overview

Position: Civil Engineer I‑II – Civil/Construction Project Engineer (Ref #14865)

Location: Columbia, Maryland, United States. Employment type: Full time, Permanent/Regular. Desired start: 29‑06‑2026. Remote work: In office.

Job Family: TA – STUDIES & DESIGN.

Responsibilities

Support the design, procurement, construction, installation and inspection of systems and components associated with spent nuclear fuel storage systems. For Horizontal Storage Modules (NUHOMS, EOS, MATRIX):

  • Prepare procurement specifications and design drawings.
  • Review concrete contractor documentation (material testing reports, drawings, routers, special process procedures, inspection and test procedures, etc.).
  • Prepare design changes, non‑conformance evaluations during fabrication.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight to subcontractors.
  • Assist customer design of concrete pads and module layout on the pad.
  • Oversee and provide technical assistance to subcontractors or owners erecting precast units at the spent fuel storage facility.
  • Support development of new concrete module designs or improve existing ones, focusing on ease of casting, transporting, and installing.
  • Design and evaluate structures, systems, and components in accordance with industry design codes (ASME BPVC, ACI‑349, AISC 360, etc.).
  • Interface with designers, project engineers and analytical disciplines to ensure constructability.
  • Review rebar/construction drawings.
Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or Structural) plus 0‑2 years related experience. Advanced degrees (MS or MBA) may substitute for 1‑2 years, and PhD may substitute for 2‑3 years. PE license is accepted in lieu of a 4‑year engineering degree in applicable states.
  • Demonstrated background where quick thinking and problem solving are critical.
  • Excellent organization, planning and priority‑setting skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, customers and regulatory authorities.
  • Experience with mix designs, rebar detailing, batching and concrete placement.
  • Experience with precast or cast‑in‑place concrete in nuclear or DOT environments.
  • Flexibility for short‑term site/field assignments as Field Engineer (days to 6 months).

Desired qualifications (used to differentiate candidates):

  • Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • Familiarity with Design, Analysis and Testing.
  • Experience with ACI 318, ACI 349, ASTM C94 and PCI Manual; coursework using AWS D1.1 welding code.
  • Experience with AISC standards for steel structures.
  • Experience with construction management.
  • Experience in design and stress analysis for reinforced concrete structures.
Pay Range

US$80,000 – 95,000 per year.
