Job summary

Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN seeks a structural engineer to develop high‑quality design packages, including drawings, specs and calculations. You will provide on‑site field support during construction to ensure correct implementation and work with peers on scopes, criteria, and material estimates.

Responsibilities include walking down existing facilities to support accurate design documentation and on‑site support for construction personnel.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited civil/structural engineering degree or equivalent with required GPA.
  • Professional Engineering license or ability to obtain one after required experience.
  • Knowledge of design codes and standards applicable to nuclear facilities.

Job description

Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Responsibilities

This role will support the development of high-quality structural engineering design packages, including drawings, specifications, and calculations, and provide field support during construction to ensure proper implementation.

You will also work with other structural engineers to prepare conceptual engineering deliverables such as scopes/statements of work, design criteria, man‑hour estimates, and bills of material. The position also requires routinely conducting walkdowns of existing facilities to support the development of accurate design documents and to provide on‑site support to construction personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program in the United States, or an equivalent from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or a list of substantially equivalent programs, and at least 2 years of relevant experience. OR a Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. OR a Ph.D. in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum GPA requirements: 3.0/4.0 for Bachelor’s; 3.3 for Master’s; 3.5 for Ph.D. GPA requirement applies up to four years post‑graduation; beyond that engineering experience supersedes GPA.
  • Must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job‑related experience, and 1 year nuclear experience; DOE 426.2A alternative may be satisfied following employment). Newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities pending fulfillment of these requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Professional Engineering License (PE) or the ability to obtain a PE license after achieving required work experience.
  • Experience with structural design using STAAD.Pro and Tekla Tedds.
  • Experience with Microstation drafting software.
  • Experience with Revit drafting software.
  • Familiarity with consensus design codes and standards.
Security Clearance and Program Requirements
  • Requires a DOE Q clearance; all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of current clearance status, but the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance is mandatory.
  • May require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which may involve a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and a counterintelligence‑scope polygraph examination.
  • May be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence‑scope polygraph examination.
