Job summary

Knott Laboratory in Denver, CO is seeking a mid-level Civil Engineer to apply engineering principles to land development, grading and drainage, stormwater management, and related infrastructure. This on-site role reports to the Civil Engineering Manager and requires travel to project sites.

Responsibilities include design, analysis, field inspections, project management, and technical reporting. The ideal candidate has a PE or EIT, 4+ years of experience, and proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D;

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited program.
  • 4+ years of civil engineering experience.
  • E.I.T. certification or PE license.
  • Experience with land development, grading and drainage, stormwater management, or transportation projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform field inspections and travel to project sites.

Position Summary

Knott Laboratory is seeking a talented and driven Civil Engineer to join our growing engineering team. In this role, you will apply engineering principles to the planning, design, analysis, and evaluation of civil engineering projects involving land development, grading and drainage, stormwater management, retaining walls, transportation-related infrastructure, and construction-related investigations.

Reports To: Civil Engineering Manager
Experience Level: Mid-Level
Salary Range: $96,000–$122,000 annually
Essential Responsibilities
Engineering & Design
  • Design and analyze civil engineering systems including:
    • Site grading and drainage
    • Stormwater management systems
    • Water quality and detention facilities
    • Retaining walls
    • Roadways and pavement systems
    • Utility infrastructure
  • Perform engineering calculations and prepare construction documents.
  • Develop innovative solutions to complex site development and infrastructure challenges.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, local regulations, and industry standards.
Site Investigation & Evaluation
  • Conduct field inspections of construction sites, existing structures, and civil infrastructure.
  • Evaluate site conditions including drainage patterns, soil conditions, erosion concerns, and construction quality.
  • Collect and analyze field data to support project recommendations and engineering conclusions.
  • Coordinate with contractors, municipalities, and project stakeholders.
Project Management
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining schedules and budgets.
  • Assist with proposal development, scope creation, and fee estimates.
  • Monitor project progress and communicate updates to clients and internal team members.
  • Collaborate with drafting staff and technical specialists to produce high-quality deliverables.
Technical Reporting
  • Prepare clear, concise, and defensible engineering reports.
  • Document findings, analyses, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Present technical information to clients, attorneys, insurance representatives, municipalities, and project teams as needed.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 4+ years of civil engineering experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Experience with land development, grading and drainage, stormwater management, or transportation projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform field inspections and travel to project sites as needed.
Preferred
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure.
  • Experience with hydrology and hydraulic modeling software.
  • Experience with retaining wall design and geotechnical considerations.
  • Knowledge of Colorado design standards and permitting processes.
  • Project management experience.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $96,000–$122,000 (commensurate with experience and qualifications)
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM
  • Work Setting: Hybrid — approximately 60% remote/home office and 40% field inspections
