Job summary

Mendham Township is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer to lead municipal budgeting, financial planning, and year‑round oversight of accounting activities. The role requires strong knowledge of debt management, grants, and procurement, with CMFO certification being highly desirable and a pathway offered to achieve it.

The CFO will supervise staff, manage the general ledger, and coordinate financial reporting, audits, and budget presentations at public meetings.

Full-time or part-time considered. Mendham Township (population 6,016; 18 square miles) seeks an experienced, forward-thinking Chief Financial Officer. Responsibilities include municipal budget preparation and year-round oversight, general ledger maintenance, debt and grant management, fund investment and disbursement, purchasing, payroll, bank reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, and debt collection. The role also includes project finance, staff management, cost-saving strategies, financial strategic planning, and attendance and participation at public and budget meetings as requested. New Jersey CMFO certification is highly desirable, or the ability to obtain certification within two years; mentorship from a seasoned CMFO is available depending on qualifications. Requires experience with Edmunds Finance Suite, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word; strong computer literacy; knowledge of municipal finance, budgeting, purchasing, grant management, and debt analysis; and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Salary: $20,000-$130,000, commensurate with full-time or part-time status, qualifications, and experience.
