Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is offering a Chemical Engineering Co-Op in Middletown, OH. The program supports Spring (January–May) or Summer (May–August) terms, with timing discussed at interview.

Interns will work with engineering and operations leaders to solve real-world problems and can be considered for future full-time roles. Responsibilities include analyzing failure data, conducting tests for quality, and designing fabrication and processing procedures.

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in Chemical Engineering or other related technical degrees.
  • Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2027.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.
  • Conduct tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure quality.
  • Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials.
  • Design and direct the testing and/or control of processing procedures.
  • Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives.
  • Plan and implement laboratory operations for developing material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards.
  • Review product plans and provide recommendations for manufacturability while meeting design objectives.

Job description

Location: Middletown, OH Co-op term may be completed during either the Spring (January to May) or Summer (May to August) semester, with timing to be discussed during the interview process. As a Chemical Engineering Co-Op at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location, but will generally reflect the duties outlined below.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions
  • Conduct tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure their quality
  • Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials
  • Design and direct the testing and/or control of processing procedures
  • Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials
  • Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives
  • Monitor material performance and evaluate material deterioration
  • Plan and implement laboratory operations for the purpose of developing material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards
  • Review new product plans and make recommendations for ease of manufacturability while meeting the product design objectives, such as strength, weight, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost
  • Potentially supervise a crew of hourly employees
  • Various other duties as assigned to support the business
Minimum Qualifications
  • Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in Chemical Engineering or other related technical degrees
  • Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2027
