Job summary

The Cleveland-Cliffs internship program in Middletown, OH offers a Spring or Summer co-op for aspiring chemical engineers. Interns work beside industry leaders to solve real-world problems and gain hands-on experience across materials, processes, and quality control.

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a BS in Chemical Engineering or related technical degree.
  • Completion of at least sophomore year by Summer 2027.
  • Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze product failure data and lab results to identify root causes.
  • Test raw materials and finished products for quality.
  • Determine fabrication and joining methods for materials.
  • Design and direct testing and control of processing procedures.
  • Review product plans for manufacturability while meeting design objectives.
  • Potentially supervise a crew of hourly employees.

As an intern/co-op with Cleveland-Cliffs, you will build life-long professional connections and have the opportunity to be considered for future full-time employment.As a Chemical Engineering Co-Op at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location, but will generally reflect the duties outlined below.Summary of Responsibilities:Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutionsConduct tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure their qualityDetermine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materialsDesign and direct the testing and/or control of processing proceduresDetermine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materialsEvaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectivesMonitor material performance and evaluate material deteriorationPlan and implement laboratory operations for the purpose of developing material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standardsReview new product plans and make recommendations for ease of manufacturability while meeting the product design objectives, such as strength, weight, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and costPotentially supervise a crew of hourly employeesVarious other duties as assigned to support the businessMinimum Qualifications:Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in Chemical Engineering or other related technical degreesCompletion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2027Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.Cleveland-Cliffs is a leading North America-based steel producer with focus on value-added sheet products, particularly for the automotive industry.
