Job summary

TTUHSC seeks a Registered Nurse to provide nursing care in a unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The RN operates under clinical supervision of the Unit Director of Nurses and implements unit objectives and policies.

Responsibilities include daily assignments, medication administration, EHR documentation, on‑call rotation, and collaboration with staff to improve patient care. A valid Texas RN license and at least two years of nursing experience are required.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
• Two years of nursing experience, with at least 6 months as an RN.
• Possession of a valid, current RN license as approved by the Texas State Board.

Responsibilities

• Makes daily assignments and ensures completion.
• Communicates patient data via EHR to support decision-making.
• Assists with exams and procedures and documents intervention in EHR.
• Administer or assist with medication administration and documentation.
• Attend staff meetings and share information with the team.
• Maintain knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.
• Monitor access to care for housing areas; log inventory of sharps, instruments, and keys.
• Accept on‑call rotation; assist in planning and directing unit management.
• Respond to requests promptly.

Employees in this classification are responsible for nursing care at unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Implements unit objectives and administrative policies. This position is under clinical supervision of the Unit Director of Nurses.

Major/Essential Functions

• Makes daily assignments as appropriate and ensures all daily assignments are accomplished.
• Communicates patient data using Electronic Health Record (EHR) to support decision‑making to improve patient care.
• Assists with or performs exams and procedures and documents intervention in EHR.
• Administer or assist with administration and documentation of medication.
• Supports the goal of the unit by attending meetings and sharing the information with the staff in regular staff meetings.
• Maintains working knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.
• Monitor patient Access to Care for housing areas assigned to your shift.
• Assures that physical counts of sharps, instruments, & keys are correct and documented in appropriate logs.
• Accepts on call rotation.
• Assist in planning, coordinating, directing management functions for the unit.
• Responds to all request in a timely manner as required.

Registered Nurse Shift Differential

Day Shift Employees: Earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday. Night Shift Employees: Earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked Monday through Friday. Earn an extra $8.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday.

Required Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited nursing program. Two years of nursing experience, with at least 6 months of that experience as a Registered Nurse. Possession of a valid, current RN license as approved by the Texas State Board of Examiners.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years RN Experience; One (1) year supervisor experience; and previous experience in a correctional facility environment..
