Job summary

VCA Capital Area Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Animal Hospital is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Veterinary Assistant to join our ICU team. In this role, you'll work side by side with veterinarians and technicians to deliver exceptional, compassionate care to every patient who walks through our doors.

Qualifications

• Experience assisting veterinarians and technicians during emergency procedures.
• Ability to monitor hospitalized patients overnight.
• Capable of preparing treatment areas and maintaining a sterile environment.
• Strong communication with overnight team and clients.

Responsibilities

• Restraints and handles patients safely during triage, treatment, and emergency procedures.
• Monitors hospitalized patients overnight and reports changes to the veterinary team.
• Assists technicians and veterinarians during emergency treatments, procedures, and diagnostics.
• Prepares treatment areas, surgical suites, and equipment, maintaining a clean, organized, and sterile environment.
• Supports patient husbandry for hospitalized and recumbent patients—feeding, walking, cage cleaning, bedding changes, and comfort care.
• Assists with sample collection and basic lab test setup under supervision.
• Keeps accurate patient records and communicates with the overnight technician and veterinarian team.
• Assists with client communication and patient intake/discharge during overnight hours.

VCA Capital Area Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Animal Hospital is seeking a compassionate and dedicated experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our ICU team.

In this role, you'll work side by side with our veterinarians and technicians to deliver exceptional, compassionate care to every patient who walks through our doors. You'll play a hands-on role across patient handling, treatment support, and daily hospital operations — all in service of the pets who depend on us and the pet parents who trust us with their care.

Compensation: $20.00 - $32.00 / hour dependent on experience, and skill set.

$2 shift diff for weekdays / $3 shift diff for weekends

Potential Schedule: Full-time, (3) 12 hour shifts 6 pm - 6am (overnight)

Veterinary Assistant ER/ICU Skills

• Assists technicians and veterinarians during emergency treatments, procedures, and diagnostics

• Supports patient husbandry for hospitalized and recumbent patients — feeding, walking, cage cleaning, bedding changes, and comfort care
• Assists with sample collection and basic lab test setup under supervision
• Helps maintain accurate patient records and communicates clearly with the overnight technician and veterinarian team
• Assists with client communication and patient intake/discharge during overnight hours
• Stays calm and effective under pressure in a fast-paced, high-acuity emergency environment
