Job summary

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is seeking a Swim Instructor to teach proper stroke technique, water safety, and class management under supervision. You will work with staff to welcome and engage members, ensuring high-quality service and safe activities in the pool environment.

Responsibilities include leading group lessons, ensuring equipment readiness, and tracking each student’s progress while modeling YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 16 years of age.
• Red Cross Lifeguarding/YMCA Lifeguarding preferred; cross over within six months of hire.
• Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor preferred; cross over within six months of hire.
• CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 certification.
• Complete trainings: NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment on hire and annually.
• Criminal background and CPS checks clearance.

Responsibilities

• Teach swim lessons in the water to assigned groups for scheduled sessions.
• Ensure all equipment and supplies are accessible before class.
• Maintain skills checklist for each student during session.
• Lead with professional attire and safety awareness.
• Follow Emergency Operations Plan and incident reporting procedures.
• Promote YMCA mission and supportive environment.
