Duke University Health System's Ophthalmic Center at NCEENT of North Durham seeks a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to support physicians and staff in performing diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, and visual fields under supervision.

The role requires a high school education or equivalent, 1 year in Ophthalmology/Optometry or a certified Ophthalmic Technician program, JCAHPO certification, and BLS.

Qualifications

• Education requirement is generally equivalent to a high school education.
• Experience required: 1 year in Ophthalmology/Optometry or graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
• Certification: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant by JCAHPO and BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary screening examinations under supervision including visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, and refraction.
• Examine cornea, lens, and anterior chamber with a slit lamp and note variations from normal; administer dilation or anesthetic drops as needed.
• Handle clerical tasks: appointments, phone screening, message relays, and record-keeping in patient charts.
• Maintain rooms and supplies, sterilize instruments, and calibrate/maintain equipment as needed.
