Qualifications

Position Summary

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) performs occupational therapy treatments according to the plan of care established by a licensed Occupational Therapist. The COTA collaborates with patients, families, therapists, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to help patients achieve optimal outcomes.

This position also supports departmental initiatives, quality improvement efforts, mentorship activities, and rehabilitation program development.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Treatment
  • Deliver occupational therapy interventions under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.
  • Implement individualized treatment plans designed to improve function, mobility, independence, and quality of life.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on therapeutic activities, home programs, and adaptive techniques.
  • Utilize therapy equipment, modalities, and treatment techniques appropriately to maximize outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding treatment progress.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide coordinated patient care.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Complete timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation.
  • Maintain records that support treatment interventions, patient progress, and billing requirements.
  • Adhere to regulatory, payer, and departmental documentation standards.
  • Ensure documentation is completed according to established timelines and policies.
Team & Department Support
  • Maintain productivity expectations while delivering quality patient care.
  • Assist teammates and support department operations as needed.
  • Participate in team meetings, performance improvement initiatives, and program development activities.
  • Support rehabilitation aides, students, interns, and staff through mentorship and guidance.
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture.
Professional Development
  • Maintain professional competency through continuing education and evidence-based practice.
  • Share knowledge gained through continuing education with department staff.
  • Serve as a rehabilitation resource within the organization and community.
  • Stay current on industry trends, research, and best practices in occupational therapy.
Qualifications
Required Education & Licensure
  • Associate Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Current Indiana Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) license in good standing.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification or ability to obtain within organizational guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a rehabilitation, outpatient, acute care, or healthcare setting preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and patient education skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining collaboration with the rehabilitation team.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist patients throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds independently and greater weights with assistance when required.
  • Ability to push wheelchairs and equipment and provide CPR when necessary.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases and healthcare environments.
