Job summary

Qualifications

  • Active Medical Assisting Certification required.
  • BLS certification required at hire for SC locations or prior to independent patient care.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of SC-accredited MA program or equivalent training aligned to cert exam.
  • Externship/clinical lab training preferred.
  • 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect patient care within Medical Assisting scope.

  • Travel to other facilities as directed to meet patient-care needs.
  • Explain procedures and medications to patients; provide refill information as directed.

Job description

  • Provide direct and indirect patient care within the Medical Assisting scope of practice and state guidelines
  • Obtain and document patients’ chief complaints, vital signs, health maintenance checks, medication reviews, and other relevant information
  • Document patient and family needs and participate in planning and implementing patient care
  • Administer ordered oral, injectable, and topical medications
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition and report them to the provider
  • Troubleshoot issues and elevate problems to the provider, supervisor, or appropriate internal resource
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician
  • Travel to other facilities or adjust working hours as directed to meet patient-care needs
  • Maintain clean, orderly, safe, and properly equipped work areas and examination rooms
  • Assist patients and providers with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, patient preparation, troubleshooting, and documentation
  • Accurately document in electronic medical records and manage provider-directed EHR inbox messages
  • Perform front-desk workflows such as MyChart requests, registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, labs, diagnostic tests, and follow-up visits
  • Collect co-pays and order supplies
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and perform routine laboratory and specimen-handling tasks
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients
  • Provide prescription and refill information to pharmacies as directed by the provider
Requirements
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the listed certifying organizations (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire and required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
  • High School/GED (required)
  • In South Carolina, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program, an approved career and technical education health sciences program, a U.S. military medical assisting program, a U.S. Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship program, or an employer-delivered training program aligned to a nationally accredited certification exam
  • Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred)
  • 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred)

  • Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and teams in a high-volume environment
