QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: Certificate as a Medical Assistant from the State of Connecticut.
- Required: High School graduate or GED equivalent.
- Required: Demonstrated competence in the clinical setting, including phlebotomy and obtaining vital signs.
- Required: Working knowledge of insurance, HMO and commercial carrier plans.
- Required: Working knowledge of ICD-10 diagnostic and CPT procedural codes.
- Required: Excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Required: Familiarity with Medical Record/Electronic Medical Record documentation guidelines.
- Required: Demonstrated ability to prioritize, problem solve, multi-task and anticipate physician needs.
- Required: Proficiency Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
JOB SUMMARY
The Certified Medical Assistant position requires a multi-skilled individual dedicated to assisting in direct patient care management. The person in this position performs both administrative and clinical duties; assisting the Registered Nurse in their provision of patient care and treatment and contributes to the efficient operation of their assigned department.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Job necessitates sitting/working at desk and those functions associated with clerical tasks (i.e. reaching, bending to access records, drawers, and shelves).
- Job involves carrying of documents, medical records, books, chairs, or small equipment.
- Fine manipulation is required as related to writing, typing and computer usage.
- Job requires movement to greet, assist with patient care activities, directing/escorting patients/families/ physicians, others, 1:1 supervision of patients, assist with feeding, transfers, toileting, dressing skills. Fine and gross manipulation as related to these activities.
- May frequently require lifting/transfer of patients 50-100 lbs., (occasionally over 100 lbs.), occasional pushing and pulling which may be up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent bending, occasional squatting, kneeling, reaching above shoulders, forward reaching, twisting and good balance reactions. Visual / perceptual skills as necessary to perform skills as above (i. e., seeing computer/keyboard, hearing and responding to call bell).
- Job requires functional use of both upper and lower extremities to perform above skills/tasks.
- Job requires sensory skills i.e. palpation / visual inspection / observation, olfactory and auditory and abilities as necessary to perform clinical skills (i.e. phlebotomy, vital signs) and ability to communicate with patient population.
COGNITIVE DEMANDS
- Task requires independent problem identification.
- Task requires flexibility of thought, reasoning, organizational skills and the ability to act in some new or unfamiliar situations.
- A high degree of selective attention, discernment, perception and/or concentration are necessary to complete tasks.
- Task requires legibility, spelling accuracy and logical sentence and paragraph organization.
- A working knowledge and familiarity with professional (medical) terms and definitions is required.
- Task requires spontaneous communication and paraphrasing in and out of the context of discussion, active listening skills and ability to dialogue with multiple parties.
- Task requires the ability to comprehend lengthy and complex messages or paragraphs and to follow multi-stage and 3-step commands.
- Task requires the ability to add and subtract three-digit numbers. Multiply and divide by 2, 3, 4, 5, 10’s, and 100’s.
- Perform basic arithmetic operations with coins and bills for the purpose of cashier/petty cash.
WORK DEMANDS
- Job requires working primarily indoors around and interdependently with others.
- Working environment may be crowded, noisy.
- Schedule flexibility is occasionally required as census or staffing patterns dictate.
- There may be frequent exposure to body fluid/blood borne pathogens.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides patient care within scope of practice, and reports information regarding delegated tasks to appropriate licensed professional
- Provides orientation/direction to patients and families regarding services and operations.
- Perform specific tasks including phlebotomy, EKG, Vital sign monitoring, hot and cold pack application, history taking, patient transfer, and other functional assistance.
- Documents patient status/response to treatment in accordance with Medical record/Electronic Medical Record policy.
- Participates in data collection that supports performance improvement/high reliability initiatives.
- Demonstrates an awareness of the participating provider directory and individual provider controls affecting referrals, admissions, and patient visits.
- Completes all relevant paperwork, forms, service delivery sheets, chart preparation in relation to scheduled visit type and need. Maintains chart order.
- Performs all relevant medical record documentation in a timely manner according to established guidelines.
- Assists with the orientation of new employees.
- Schedules ordered patient tests and consultations with outside agencies and communicates appointments to patients.
- Notifies all appropriate team members and ancillary departments of changes in patient schedule/program.
- Completes all required hospital requisitions (lab, x-ray, purchase orders, equipment repair).
