Responsibilities

Under the direction of the healthcare provider, the Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering patient care that promotes safety and wellbeing. This includes performing preliminary physical tests such as measuring blood pressure, recording weight, temperature, pulse, and respirations, following established clinical protocols.

  1. Perform general patient care following standards and procedures.
  2. Greet and prepare patients for the healthcare provider.
  3. Obtain and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, medications, and presenting problems.
  4. Draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for lab analysis if required.
  5. Administer medications and vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, or inhalant routes as ordered.
  6. Perform routine tests such as EKGs.
  7. Schedule diagnostic tests and follow up to ensure completion.
  8. Communicate test results and care plans to patients by phone or mail as directed by the physician.
  9. Prepare, clean, sterilize instruments, maintain equipment, and ensure exam rooms are stocked and clean.
  10. Document patient care, tests, and examination results in the medical record as directed.
  11. Escalate non-routine issues to the practice manager or healthcare providers.
  12. Ensure safety checklists and quality controls are completed.

Additional responsibilities include ensuring patient safety and privacy, and performing other duties as assigned by the practice manager or healthcare provider.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of experience preferred.

Required Licensure and Certifications

  • Current/valid Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification or approved equivalent at hire.
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training

  • Ability to perform EKGs, draw blood, and administer injections.
  • Effective communication skills with staff and patients.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Sound judgment and composure in emergencies.
  • Positive attitude towards patients.
  • Proficiency with medical management software.
  • Strong work ethic and professionalism.
