Position Overview: Washington, D.C., primary care medical center that integrates nutrition education and disease prevention into medical care seeks a Certified Medical and Administrative Assistant who has completed a medical assistant program from a school accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and has at least one year of experience to provide patient care, administrative support, and patient education.

Organization Size: The Barnard Medical Center has eight employees. The founding organization, the Physicians Committee, has approximately 100 employees.

About the Role

Position Title: Certified Medical and Administrative Assistant

Position Objective: The Certified Medical and Administrative Assistant will help clinicians and other team members in providing thorough, up-to-date patient care and perform a broad range of clinical and administrative duties.

Essential Functions:

Clinical responsibilities:

  • Check vital signs, triage, and room patients
  • Perform EKGs, hearing and vision screening, step tests
  • Perform phlebotomy
  • Manage patient messages
  • Communicate with pharmacy and laboratories
  • Schedule patient appointments
  • Greet, check-in, and check-out patients
  • Request and retrieve medical records
  • Manage and stock clinical and exam room supplies
  • Complete other duties as needed or assigned

Administrative responsibilities:

  • Assist with insurance verification, billing (done via third party), and collect payments
  • Answer telephones as needed (phones are generally managed by a call center)
  • Assist with electronic medical record (activating and deactivating accounts, filing technical complaints, uploading documents and templates)
  • Facilitate communication with other departments
  • Facilitate communication with medical students participating in clinical rotations at the practice
  • Assist clinic director in ensuring that the clinic is compliant with OSHA requirements (outside consulting firm will provide guidance)
  • Support outreach efforts on behalf of the Physicians Committee and the Barnard Medical Center by helping with the annual International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine
  • Complete other duties as needed or assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Required Physical Abilities: Office work plus ability to provide in-person clinical patient care including performing phlebotomy.

Work Location: Washington, D.C. (Friendship Heights on Metro's Red Line).

Required Travel: None

Work Schedule: This is a full-time nonexempt position (40 hours per week). The work schedule is Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday: 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. and is subject to change.

Position Level: Associate

Compensation: $31.25/hour

Reports To: Clinic Director

Qualifications

All candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Education:

  • Required: High school degree
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Arts or Science degree

Credentials:

  • Required: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential: Applicants must have completed a medical assistant program from a school accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Preferred: N/A

Work Experience:

  • Required: A minimum of one year of experience as a medical assistant
  • Preferred: N/A

Additional Qualities:

  • Required: Strong customer service skills and experience with electronic health records systems
  • Preferred: Adept at using Excel
