Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance operator to perform a variety of highway maintenance tasks, operate heavy equipment, and serve as a flagger in work zones. You may also assist with snow/ice removal and emergency operations.

No formal minimum experience is required, but a CDL Class A must be earned within six months. Physical work may involve lifting up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

• No minimum training or experience required for this classification.
• Special requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required; CDL Class A must be attained within six months.

Responsibilities

• Operate power and hand tools for maintenance of tree/vegetation areas.
• Assist with placement of traffic control devices to set up work zones.
• Serve as flagger to direct traffic in work zones.
• Operate dump truck and forklift; use snowplow attachment for snow/ice removal.
• Pick up litter and debris; assist in emergency/weather operations; may work extended shifts.
