Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an equipment operator to perform heavy machinery tasks and support road construction and maintenance projects across the state.

Responsibilities include operating tandem dump trucks and large rollers, flagging traffic for safety, performing manual labor for drainage and roadway improvements, and assisting in emergency operations. CDL may be required within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
• Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping; must lift up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Operates medium equipment such as a Tandem Dump Truck and a Large Roller > 4 Tons.
• Flag traffic during road repairs to control traffic flow and ensure safety of employees, the public, and equipment.
• Perform manual labor: building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs and raised medians, laying pipe for driveways and drainage structures, repairing shoulders and bridges, cleaning rights-of-way.
• Assist in installation of driveways using hand tools and tamp, place aggregates, remove and reinstall mailboxes, and position large sections of pipe.
• Operate a chainsaw to remove trees from rights-of-way.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
