Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a laborer to operate medium and heavy equipment, assist in roadway repairs and drainage projects on state roads, and perform manual maintenance tasks using rakes, brooms, shovels, and chainsaws as needed.

Duties include flagging traffic for safety, supporting overnight or 12-hour shifts during weather events, and complying with licensing and physical requirements, including obtaining a Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience or equivalent.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required on entry to the position.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate medium equipment such as tandem dump truck hauling materials and supplies to and from job sites.
• Operate heavy equipment such as front-end loader in roadway surface repairs on State maintained roads.
• Perform manual labor in installation of reinforced concrete pipe and paving with asphalt.
• Use hand tools (asphalt rakes, brooms, shovels) in daily maintenance; chainsaw as needed.
• Flag traffic to ensure safety of workers and the traveling public.
• Assist in emergency/inclement weather operations and may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
