Job Title: Senior Scientist, Metallocene and Non-Metallocene Catalyst Technology
Department: Research and Development (Catalysis & Polymer Science)
Job Type: Part-Time
Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced Catalyst Technology Scientist to lead and innovate the development of next generation metallocene and non-metallocene catalysts for polyolefin applications. The position focuses on designing, synthesizing, characterizing, and testing novel catalyst systems to drive advances in polymer performance, process efficiency, and sustainability.
Main Responsibilities
Catalyst Design and Synthesis:
Design and synthesis of novel metallocene catalysts (e.g., Zr, Ti, Hf-based complexes with Cp, Ind, Flu ligands) and non-metallocene catalysts (e.g., post-metallocene, late transition metal, constrained geometry).
Optimize catalyst architecture to improve activity, comonomer incorporation, stereoselectivity, and thermal stability.
Develop scalable synthesis protocols for catalyst precursors and activators (e.g., MAO, borates, aluminum alkyls).
Catalyst Testing & Evaluation:
Perform high throughput screening of catalysts for olefin polymerization (ethylene, propylene, higher alpha olefins) using lab-scale reactors (e.g., autoclave, parallel reactors).
Evaluate catalyst performance metrics: activity, kinetics, molecular weight control, comonomer incorporation efficiency, and stereoregularity.
Analyze polymer properties (molecular weight distribution, stereoregularity, melt behavior, mechanical properties) and correlate them to catalyst structure.
Mechanistic Studies & Troubleshooting:
Investigate reaction mechanisms, active site dynamics, and deactivation pathways using spectroscopic methods (NMR, IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and computational methods (density functional theory).
Resolve catalyst performance issues and propose industrially scalable solutions.
Education:
PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or related field with a focus on organometallic chemistry, homogeneous catalysis, or olefin polymerization.
OR: Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
Experience & Skills:
Hands-on experience in synthesis and handling of air-sensitive organometallic compounds.
Strong experience with metallocene catalysts (e.g. ansa-metallocenes, CGC) and/or non-metallocene systems (e.g. FI catalysts, diimine Ni/Pd, iron/pyridine-diimine complexes).
Proficiency in olefin polymerization testing (solution, slurry, gas phase) and polymer characterization (GPC, DSC, NMR, FTIR).
Strong understanding of catalyst activation (MAO, borates, aluminum alkyls) and structure-property relationships.
Preferred:
Experience with high throughput experimentation (HTE) and kinetic modeling.
Familiarity with auxiliary catalysts required in industrial processes (e.g. silica, magnesium chloride).
Patent/publication record in catalysis or polymer science.
