Job Description

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Applies carpentry techniques and uses carpentry tools to construct,alter, repair and renovate walls, windows, doors; stairs, floors,ceilings, etc. Installs and repairs locks, locking devices andrelated systems. Inspects buildings to determine need for carpentryrepairs or alterations. Interprets and sketches layouts ofcarpentry work to be pone, and performs related work as required.Makes and/or installs building and door signs, and makes desknameplates. Provide instruction for subordinates regarding handlingof emergencies, the feasibility of performing repair or alterationand the scheduling of work. Major work contacts are with buildingoccupants, vendors, trades workers and other agency staff.

Incumbents of positions at this level receive general supervisionfrom employees of higher grade who provide procedural guidance,assign work and review performance through inspection and verbalreports for quality and compliance with standard procedures.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide instruction for subordinates regarding handling ofemergencies, the feasibility of performing repair or alteration andthe scheduling of work.
2. Major work contacts are with building occupants, vendors,trades workers and other agency staff.
3. Incumbents of positions at this level exercise directsupervision (i.e., not through an intermediate level supervisor)over, assign work to and review the performance of 1-5 skilledtradesmen.
4. Maintains buildings and related structures applying carpentrytechniques arid using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repairand/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors,roofs, gutters, locks, air-conditioners, mail slots handicappedchair rails and ramps, shelving, etc.
5. Installs locks and locking devices in doors, desks, filecabinets, etc. Assembles and installs locks using power and handtools.
6. Repairs and overhauls locking devices such as mortise, rim andkey, combination, and panic devices.
7. Inspects buildings needing carpentry repair or alterations,estimates job duration and the cost and/or quantities of labor andmaterials needed to complete the job, and reports results ofinspection to those who have complained of unsafe conditions or whohave requested alteration work.
8. Interprets and/or draws up sketches, patterns, blueprints,instructions, and/or layouts of work to be done.
9. Performs structural repair, alteration or improvement work suchas lowering ceilings and paneling rooms; preparing surfaces forplaster or cement work; studding, and plastering walls and cracksin floors or around windows; taping joints on sheetrock; andpre-cementing and/ or replacing Formica tops. Paint as needed forminor repairs/improvements that have been completed by the employee(for example replace a section of drywall this section would bepainted by the carpenter.
10. Confers with unit control section, various department heads orsupervisors regarding handling of emergencies, the feasibility ofperforming repair or alterations and the scheduling of work.
11. Makes and/or installs building and door signs and desknameplates, using a manually operated sign machine; ordersmaterials and supplies and cleaning materials, and uses judgment todetermine the size of signs and lettering to insure uniformitythroughout campus.
12. Performs related work such as framing pictures; making windowand door screens; drilling holes in signs; ordering materials andsupplies and cleaning materials; and sharpening and temperingvarious tools and equipment.
13. Operates rigging for carpentry duties.
14. Other assigned duties within the Caprenter Seriesspecification.

Requirements

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
1. Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, orequivalent part-time, experience in
carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking work, or (B) any equivalentcombination of the required
experience and the substitutions below.
2. Substitutions:
a. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, vocational orvocational school at high
school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking, andcabinetmaking may be
substituted for a maximum of two years of the requiredexperience.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in theAmerican Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees(AFSCME) bargaining unit with a title Carpenter II. The bi-weeklypay rate is $2,152.54, grade 15, Step 01, which equates to anannual salary of $55,966.04.
